Who Paid Cambridge Analytica?

The Trump campaign, said it paid Cambridge Analytica, a total of $6M for its services.

When you do the math, it costs a lot more than that, to purchase the data used for the campaign, from Facebook.

This is just for the data.

I assume Cambridge Analytica, is not running a charity, so who paid the balance, AND, Cambridge Analytica's fees?

Trump's Foundation could have been involved. He was using other people's donations as a slush fund to help bail out his companies, purchase paintings of himself, pay taxes, legal fees, etc. He tried to shut it down immediately after winning the election, but New York State refused to allow it until they finished an investigation that had started in October. That investigation is still ongoing.

@windinhishair I'm sure Mueller has heard about it by now :-)

@Northwest Mueller and NY AG Schneiderman have been sharing information for the better part of a year. Mueller definitely knows.

While I may have missed some extended family photos NOT having a Facebook account was one of the best moves I’ve ever made. What to do think of this latest rumor thst if one has Facebook messenger the default setting is turning on your phone microphone and people see ads on web pages regarding for sale that they discussed in freak life? Personally Facebook is high up on the list of places I would not trust with my personal information.
Northwest · M
@jackjjackson I don't know if the microphone is switched on by default. I don't use it, and I rarely use Facebook for anything. I have an account, but as a software developer, with FB applications, I have an account, because I need it for the apps I develop.

Little by little, we're getting desensitized to the whole thing. I use Alexa, and have at least 5 of these things around the house. It is listening to every single word I say. I am OK with it, because Amazon does not keep that data, as in, it's a passive interaction, and they only keep a record of the things specifically asked from Alexa.

Things to keep in mind: if you have an SO, whose name is Alexa, be aware that every single thing you ask her, is going to be recorded by Amazon.

Hahahahaha. Excellent point. My lovely wife goes by a different name but I’ll keep that in mind if circumstances change (highly highly doubtful). Based on that the name alone could be a total no go 😉. You’re single I think, ever date an Alexa? @Northwest

The Mercer family?
Northwest · M
@WalksWith They donated data services to the Brexit campaign, so, yes, it's possible, but their Super PAC does not have enough money to cover this particular bill (as far as I know).

@LvChris They did pay them for data to support the Brexit ad targeting as well. They're "global" bigots.
JayneA · 36-40, F
@EugenieLaBorgia he said he never got the bill
@JayneA He must be mentally handiquacked to say that!

A super PAC, Make America #1, probably paid for it.

@Byron8by7
CA did a survey of some 270,000 Facebook members, and then "scrubbed" the data from their FB friends, which is where the 50 million FB members came from.
It gets pretty complicated, pretty fast. This is why I was wondering where the money came from.

Once you start using the Graph API, to collect data, it's a multi dimensional spanning tree, algorithmic nightmare. This space is not the proper place for the algorithmic discussion, I was just wondering where the money came from, as 270K users, may lead to 50M profiles, but to get there, on your own, that's $Ms in IT spending.

@Northwest

Perhaps that will be exposed. Some kind of "dark money," or some such.

I just heard that Bannon ran the company prior to resigning to join the campaign.
Northwest · M
@jackjjackson I wrote a post about it, about 8 months ago, on SW. It's all detailed in this book:

@SapphicHeart The point being, while Bannon was running the trump campaign, he was using illegally gained data from a company is was intimately associated with and that started their activities long before trump became enamored by the attention he could get in a presidential campaign.
@MarkPaul
How do you know it was long before? Do you have access to info the rest of us haven't?

It was around 2013 that Bannon got interested in the company and introduced them to the Mercers.

When did Donald Trump become political active around the Presidential elections?
Was it when he created his 'Birther' campaign, back in 2011?

Even if it was before the thought of Donald Trump running for the 2016 election was even thought of by Mercers, Bannon, and/or Trump himself it won't matter. He is the puppet in this show. They would have picked another one had it not been for him. They would look at the colorful wannabes available, just like they did with Farage et al in the Brexit campaign.
MarkPaul · 26-30, M
Steven Bannon and Breitbart, no doubt.
I collected a few interesting clips on the subject inside this post:

@WalksWith It's really a non issue for me. If you read my About section, I have a thread participation policy. If you're not on topic, or if you post things like "you're a loser, troll, blah, blah, blah", then it's going to be deleted. If you keep on posting that exact thing, 20 times, I will delete it 20 times. If this is not the first time you do this, as in you're been stalking me, and doing it, I will report you.
