does it seem a tad unfair to serious photographers that now every human being with a phone has a camera?

I wonder if I can buy surplus body cams that police people use and it is always available if I come across something significant

levels the playing field lol

I doubt it, because although it is possible to take perfectly acceptable "ordinary" photographs with phones those are limited in what they can do. The serious photographers would have much more sophisticated equipment and of course far higher skill than most of us with an ordinary 'phone or snapshot type camera.

@ArishMell I love that scene in Secret Life of Walter Miitty where Ben Stiller climbs the mountain to find Sean Penn, the Life Magazine Photographer in a blind trying to capture an image of like a snow leopard

@atlantic59 ah, I'm afraid I've not seen that.

@ArishMell I've seen nudes taken on this site that I didn't care one iota about the f stop, they told a story that worked for me

There is an art in framing a really good image and trained photographers seem to be able to imagine what a frame around a subject might look like. If you want proof of how bad phone photos can be because of the casual and slap-dash way an amateur goes abut it, I'll send you some of mine.

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow but every once in a while, -being in the right place to capture something unbelievable overrides all the expertise in the world...-like capturing a politician in a compromising position wearing a facial expression that will forever define them.
@atlantic59 Absolutely. It is why I have a camera on most of the time and do plenty of street photography.

Haven't caught anything of that degree in ten years though.

@FreddieUK I totally agree. My phone camera pictures rate more as evidence than art. I did buy a good "real" Nikon camera some years ago. But I just dont have the eye for the art. So I permanently loaned it to a friend who loves photography and knows how to do it..😷

I accidentally shot a short film from the inside of my shorts pocket the other day and with a little bit of editing it could be a bit of a thriller movie
It’s not the device making the image. It is the person using natural and technical talents which makes the phone camera or regular camera work for them.
Not really. Just because you have access to a tool doesn't mean the person knows how to use it effectively.

many great pictures that capture a moment are done on a cel phone, however. timing is everything
@atlantic59 Not wrong but for alot of photography the ergonomics of a phone are terrible and good luck framing a shot in direct sunlight.
atlantic59 · 61-69, M
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow you are absolutely right..plus on my cel phone I gotta draw a code in before I take a picture and valuable seconds are lost..like the time I came on a Sasquatch family having lunch and I couldn't capture it and they ended up laughing at me as they sauntered away

To each their own. What i hate is seeing people with their phones interfering with others with cameras, particularly at special events
@samueltyler2 I know wedding photographers that quit over that. Being tired of being photo bombed by some random guests with a phone or tablet.

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow I never even thought of them. wow. yeah, I can see how they are going out of business as well
