Will Windows 11 have programs that need a subscription now?

https://www.tweaktown.com/news/103367/after-40-years-of-being-free-microsoft-has-added-paywall-to-notepad/index.html

Basically in Windows 11 you need a MS account and a 365 subscription to be able to use notepad. I think by the time Windows 12 comes out, you'll have to pay a yearly fee to use it. This is beyond crazy.

I don’t do gaming, so I guess I don’t count but I’ve been using Firefox since explorer ended. I have not went back to explore when it came back as edge. I got used to fire fox and everything seems fine when streaming and any kind of news or whatever I wanna do.

@WonderGirl Yeah according to that article:

"TL;DR: Microsoft has introduced a paywall for Notepad, requiring a Microsoft 365 subscription to access new features like the AI-powered Rewrite tool.

The age of Notepad having a paywall has arrived, with the simple writing software now prompting users to sign into a Microsoft account to access new tools such as Rewrite, a new feature that uses artificial intelligence to rewrite highlighted text. Users attempting to use the new feature will be prompted with a Microsoft account sign-in page, and if the account doesn't have an active Microsoft 365 membership, the user will be required to sign up. This is the paywall.

It should be noted that you can still use Notepad without a Microsoft account, and users can go as far as removing the Rewrite icon completely from Notepad. Despite the ability to still use the software without an account, Microsoft has received some criticism for implementing what is most definitely a paywall/advertisement for a built-in piece of Windows software."

Ohhhh so I guess if you want to use their new Rewrite tool, that's when it asks for a sign-in. I still wouldn't be surprised the day MS makes Windows subscription based.

@markinkansas Yeah I kinda have that too, well just a lot of gaming consoles, but they're all on the entertainment center. So I have my cords routed through flex conduit that I work with at my job to kind of make the cord situation look not so bad lol. I did just watch a video on the KVM, I get it now. Yeah I could definitely use that. The more familiar I could get with a Linux setup, the better I would feel about making the switch. I used Linux Mint for all of 2 days, and was doing live boot sessions for a month before that. Just the gaming part of it didn't go over so well.

I use Linux Ubuntu and Zorin. Microsoft is owned by the 3 letter govt peoples. FBI, CIA, NSA, etc

@Confined I saw in a comment on the article I posted that Zorin has an emulator to where you can run most Windows games/applications? My only concern really is the ability to run games. If can play DOS games as well as games from Windows 95 up to 10 (not highly demanding games) then I'd make the switch tomorrow honestly.

I used Linux Mint and liked it, but just the being able to game part of it isn't so great.
