Holding phone side ways to ear was when there were nokia phones with loud speakers.

I can think of one inmate straight away, from a few years ago.
This was a young woman sitting on a railway-station bench about ten yards from mine, yakking excitedly and almost non-stop in what I think was Italian. The woman at the other end of the 'phone could hardly get a word in edgeways.
She was sitting upright, gazing straight ahead, 'phone flat on her lap, 'speaker turned well up so I could hear the occasional edgeways word; as if she was trying to speak not to the 'phone but to anyone on a diesel multiple-unit train idling very noisily at a platform opposite ours but about fifty yards away.
I was glad she didn't board my train, or if she did, I didn't hear her.
