Among a mixed social setting I was in not long ago, was a family with a son I guessed aged about eight or ten. Sitting just across the room from me, he was absolutely engrossed in his 'phone.
At one point I saw his mother hand him a banana. He took it, but hardly lifted his eyes from the 'phone, let alone look up at her, and certainly did not say "Thank you". Yet she seemed to accept this rudeness in silence as if normal. She'd even peeled it for him.
