Is the Microsoft Authenticator app trustworthy?

One of the orgs for which I have to use the MS Office 365 suite now seems to be enforcing a new IT policy where the Microsoft Authenticator app is required to be installed on at least one mobile device.

I can't even log into the email account for the org on my Windows PC anymore without having it.

I do not fully trust having to use extra apps, etc. for security authentication so can any of you who have to use the app for access to your MS Outlook email at your org or enterprise let me know if it's safe and legit to use?

I use it all the time and haven't had any problems. I also have the google one which in some ways I prefer but for Microsoft accounts you have to use the Microsoft one. The problem is that it is essentaily a legal requirement for companies to use it - it's how Microsoft does "2FA" - Two Factor Authentication and that is "strongly recommended" both by EU and UK information security bodies- so not using it puts companies at much greater risk of regulatory action if they suffer a data breach and this isn't enabled.
