I spilled 7 Up soda in the top of my PC. Had to replace the ram sticks completely, also replaced the GPU just in case.

That happened over 5 years ago, ever since then my PC has been fine.

@twiigss what issues did the pc have after the accident?
twiigss · M
@Pathetic So it first started with what seemed like the whole PC freezing at random. I was then able to use a keyboard shortcut to get to task Manager and then realized it was the mouse freezing. So in order to fix it I had to restart the computer.

The mouse freezing became so bad that within the first couple minutes of booting, the mouse would freeze, so I wasn't even able to use it normally.

Once I replaced all the ram sticks, no more mouse freezing.

@twiigss The lesson is that we should not use the pc as a table. It's so reckless.

@Pathetic I didn't use it as a table. I was temporarily moved out of my room and had my drink on the make shift table that was next to the PC. When I went to grab the glass, my hand knocked it over.

That's not something I typically do. It was completely out of the norm, and should not have happened but it did.

@twiigss did you change the ram yourself?
twiigss · M
@Pathetic Yep. I took out the ram myself, went to the computer store and bought 4, 8gb sticks, and then put the new sticks in. My board maxes out at 32gb. Then I took out my GPU and at the same store, bought a refurbished GPU.

@twiigss how much ram is necessary ? For a gaming pc?
twiigss · M
@Pathetic well it used to be 8gb. But I've seen some games come out that want 8gb. So there are people who just go with 16gb as a standard.

Personally, if I wouldn't have spilled the drink on the PC, I would have still maxed the board out.

Long story short, if your board maxes out at 32gb, or if it maxes out at 64gb then I would still at least get 32gb in there.

@twiigss how hard is it to install the ram if you dont have computer experience?
Some games seem to use alot of ram ? Is it normal for the pc to use 90%?
twiigss · M
@Pathetic it mostly depends on the game. Usually when new games come out, they can be full of memory holes and end up using a lot of memory unnecessarily.

Replacing the ram is actually really easy. Above and below the stick, vertically, are these white switches and you basically push the top switch up and pull the bottom switch down and that loosens the ram stick to where it's about to fall out and you're just able to pull it right out of there, it comes out real easily.

To put new ram in don't touch the switches, make sure the stick is in the right orientation. Usually what I'll do is I'll push on the bottom of the stick and that should automatically lock that white bottom switch for you. Then just push the top of the ram stick in, and that should lock the top switch. If not you can lock the switches yourself.

That's all there is to it. And I'm sure there's plenty of instructional videos on YouTube that you could check out as well.

@twiigss you have explained it pretty good
