if you had a file deleting virus, would you know

i get paranoid and worried about this at times...i use a windows desktop computer, i have a lot of media files on it, thousands in each media folder...and i want to know would i know if i had a file deleting virus? if i had that virus would it delete files slowly one by one over time? or would it delete lots of files all in one go?

what are the signs of a virus like this?

I don't think that one would know unless you started noticing files going missing that you might deem important.

If you can swing it, I'd get an anti-virus software if you are that worried about it.
