New McAfee Virus?

It looks like McAfee has a new virus to detect. It advises updating Windows, even on Macs, and states one McAfee licence has expired, even when one doesn't have McAfee. I haven't seen it (I run Linux) but from reports I've heard, it appears to be an attempt to sell more copies of McAfee.

So McAfee is actually the virus. Always have been suspicious of commercial anti-virus/spyware/malware products.

@zonavar68 I often think anti-virus companies create viruses or just announce the existence of them to sell their anti-virus software.

The 'Antivirus expired - renew your McAffee today - 95% discount' type scam has been going on for a while. Nothing to do with McAffee at all! It has popped up in my email a number of times - complete with improbable use of the English language, alarmist tactics and all the rest.

It's fairly crude by modern standards but with the advent of AI this sort of thing could get more sophisticated.

@supersnipe I see loads of emails like that but it seem this one is actually a virus of some sort that affects browsers.
