So the EU made a requirement that all phones sold after 2027 have to have removable batteries

they have to be opened without heat or special tools - and IF they require special tools then the tools must be provided at the time of sale.

that's really going to cut down on the number of phones that get thrown away....

Sadly - they phones won't have to be updated - so while you may have a perfectly workable phone that's 10 years old - the software will make it a danger to use for anything more than a text or phone call.

But it's a nice first step.

Gee, the way phones used to be made.

And. Bring back Headphone Jacks and boycott Google!!!

The Phone I'm using is 5 years old.

@FreestyleArt I won't buy a car without a headphone jack - even though I use Bluetooth -I want the option

Since planned obsolescence is part of the profit game for companies, the price of a phone will skyrocket.
Pretzel · 70-79, M
@Ontheroad probably. Less electronic garbage but more initial expense. Fewer phones sold so less people employed. And outdated electronics with more security flaws

Interesting how one "fix" will have additional outcomes
Ontheroad · M
@Pretzel yep, most times a fix comes with other challenges. I'm all for the less waste part, and having to pay up front for a phone that last longer is okay with me, but it could for sure hit those on tighter budgets.

It as usual comes down to money and when it comes down to money. Comapnies aren't going to pay the cost... we will.

When socialists dictate technology

This will come at a cost: battery life, or size, weight.
