what u guy's think of this ram shortage

I guess all these AI businesses is buying it all up. So instead of ram costing a couple hundred now it is 2 or 3 time's more. I heard certain cell phone businesses are going to bring out new phones with less ram and storage. Also this is going to impact everything that takes ram to work

Well I am glad I built mine in early January 2025 from Christmas and boxing day sales mostly.

And I have maxed out the RAM on my PC.

Not the fastest by 64GBs of DD4 should hopefully last me awhile before I need to start worrying.

I also run Linux so less bloat to begin with.

One thing I am hoping but doubt will happen is that this hardware shortage will force software companies to actually bother with optimizing their software again because people need to make less memory go further.

But realistically optimizing software has only really been a thing for mobile for probably a decade at this point.

We might see it turn into a similar situation as we saw with GPUs before Intel came along. A couple companies jacking up prices for less and less value.

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow this video I seen this guy was talking about certain businesses going backwards with cell phones and computers. It would some what force AI businesses to slow down. So they could flood the market with ram and storage to be able to make cell phones and computers to be able to handle AI better if that makes any sense

@smileylovesgaming You are right that this could cause an issue if home computers and phones can't get the tech required to run AI locally this could be an issue. But with cloud computing they could make it work by turning everyone's computer or phone into basically a glorified thin client for everything. Like how people used to use a dummy terminal to log into mainframes 30 to 40 years ago. Just more distributed and now the ability to monetize it as a subscription service. We already see this kind of shift in approach with Windows which is now a portal to a collection of subscription services, not really an OS anymore.

I'm glad I built my PC earlier this year. Think A.I. is going to drive prices up for awhile. It's really enticing companies to sell to them. Ram and from what i heard it will hit storage as well. It will plateau at some point, but it's not going to disappear.

AI is responsible for it, directly and indirectly.

The switch to commercial RAM production for data centers, meant major manufactures prioritized higher margin HBM, leaving consumer-based DRAM in extremely low supply. This is going to persist through 2028. Hobbyists will have to pay through the nose, and may be forced to switch to commercial rigs. I have not built a single system outside the Raspberry Pi universe.

@jackrabbit10 kind of looks like people are buying it all up on eBay and Amazon. I hope after a few months thing's kind of settle down and some of the other businesses that make ram for the public can make more
