Depends on the dog. I’ve only crated mine when they were pups so they stay out of trouble when I’m not around.
Or for potty training. They don’t typically like to sit in their own feces. So they are forced to bark when they need to go to the bathroom.
Then, when they get older they like being in their crate. So if I absolutely need to crate them for any reason they are very comfortable in there.

It's for the owners convenience not the dogs.

Only time we put our dog in a kennel was when we left the house because he would eat the furniture. Turns out he would eat the kennel too, so we keep him outside. We didn’t have a fenced area for him at the time, we were in the process of building it. Now he hates even being inside, just wants to go out and look for lizards to eat.

@GlitterBug my dogs never really bother the lizards. There cats on the other hand...

He also tries to play with snakes. Except rattlesnakes, I’m glad he knows not to mess with those. He throws a fit when he sees one. @ViciDraco

@GlitterBug fortunately we don't have as many of those out east here. Mine like to try to catch wasps and bees.

I don't understand that either. Dogs should be able to walk around inside the house, etc unless there's a valid reason to have them in a cage.
Makes zero sense. Why have a dog if you are going to just cage it?

falls under Animal cruelty as far as I'm concerned
if someone doesn't have the land/space for it outside to live, play, explore, etc. then quite frankly, they don't need a dog... they'd be better off with a hamster or something...

I once thought like you. But then the dogs caused serious damage when left home alone.
