Take a day to go visit a shelter. There are a lot of choices. So many animals have been abused or abandoned. You can have your child sit with the dog. Watch them and look for their reaction. My Pug came via a Puppy Mill. Too many they couldn't sell and not enough food to go around. Don't bring them home unless you are sure. It's too sad for the animal to have a touch of hope, then have it taken away. There should be a Humane Society in most every town.
Remember to have him 'chipped' for identification in case he gets out so you can be reuited.
I do not advise Puppy Pads on the floor. Because they will never be able to have the 'thought' to pee in the grass.

a mutt from the local animal shelter

@RedWidow agreed, RedWidow … mixed-breeds usually have better temperaments and are less high strung than pure-breds. animal shelters also take animals out from unfavorable conditions and merge into what could be an ideal situation for both family and pet combined. introduce medical into this equation(shots, neuter/spay) … and one comes out with definite benefits.

this offers yet another benefit … putting shady puppy-mill proprietors outta' business.

Cocker Spaniels are good but they are very emotionally fragile so you need to treat them extremely gentle. Or they can turn into a little devil.

@JimiJames I had a cocker spaniel when I was a child. He was the best dog.

A pitbull of course!

@Vgore0304 As with any dog, it depends upon genetics and training. If they aren't inbred or wired wrong from day one, and they have a responsible owner, they are a great companion dog. That being said, I wouldn't recommend a pitbull to someone who has small children. As with ALL dogs, they need to be monitored around kids. PBs are very strong and can easily knock over and hurt a small child. They do require an owner who is familiar with the breed and willing to put in the time to train them properly.

FYI, the one in my avi was the best dog I've ever had. I've owned and fostered a lot of dogs. She used to help me retrain the fosters so they could be adopted into new homes. Extremely smart and loving breed.

@JTMarcus I always been scared of pit bulls
JTMarcus · 36-40, M
@Vgore0304 So was I, along with German Shephards, Rottweilers, & Dobermans. Then my father adopted a pitbull from a shelter. He was the original wonder dog! Sweet beyond belief. That's when I realized there was more to the breed than what I'd been told. I started researching breeds along with training. That's also the time when I started getting involved working with shelters and retraining problem dogs for adoption into new homes. With the large breeds like the ones I've mentioned, it's really in the training and being a responsible owner. Too many people do the wrong things by these dogs.
