Take a day to go visit a shelter. There are a lot of choices. So many animals have been abused or abandoned. You can have your child sit with the dog. Watch them and look for their reaction. My Pug came via a Puppy Mill. Too many they couldn't sell and not enough food to go around. Don't bring them home unless you are sure. It's too sad for the animal to have a touch of hope, then have it taken away. There should be a Humane Society in most every town.
Remember to have him 'chipped' for identification in case he gets out so you can be reuited.
I do not advise Puppy Pads on the floor. Because they will never be able to have the 'thought' to pee in the grass.
