my dog used to spend close to 20 hours a day in a crate too small for him

now when he's ready for bed he stands next to me and sighs until i pull the blanket back for him and make sure he has his pillow ready and only once his spot is set up just the way he likes it will he get settled down as close to me as he can physically be

I don't know a whole lot about how dogs communicate or think, actually very little for how much dogs were involved in my life growing up. But I can't help but wonder if this is his way of recognizing that his old days of being put in a tiny cage are past him, and as long as he waits for you and trusts you to finish doing all those intricate things with your arms that humans do (like setting up the bed), he won't have to go through that anymore.
