Trying to Catch a Kitten...

Probably feral, first noticed he/her 2 or 3 weeks ago hiding in the back yard under some junk and yelling for an apparently no longer available mommy. Started leaving food and water, she/him has been making home base under the front porch or out back. had the critter sort of in a trap last week but I set it wrong and it didn't latch at one end and kitten went scampering off for a couple of days. got the camera set up we are back in business tonight. not keeping the little escape artist, already have three, one was a very similar rescue from a couple years ago. pretty much have my bag limit of cats. wet food in the trap and camera focused, we shall see what the morning brings...!

I hope you get em!

I have trapped two my current cats and a few others before. Having a mentor helps over time. Somebody with more experience. the local cat rescue group knows somebody like that. If you can test your trap indoors before you put it out that helps.

Cats are smart enough to notice the pressure plate but you can "hide it with a thin slice of carboard that looks like a ramp to them.

The bottom latch that holds the back of the trap is a pain. If it isn't secure (I have messed that up before) they can scoot out of the back.

You can hair-pin the front catch / the bar that holds the front gate open so less pressure sets it off. You do that moving the hook so that just the end rests on the hook. It takes practice to learn that.

Sometimes if you are having trouble can use ties to keep the trap open an put food in for a few days to get the cat comfortable going into the trap. That is probably the best tip. I learned a much more experienced trapper.

They are really smart and perceptive. For instance if you set the trap in their eye line and test it they will understand what is happening.

I see you are American like me. Shelters--even no kill shelters won't keep them for long before putting them down. A no kill will just send them to a kill shelter. If you can find a cat rescue group someone will foster them and give them a better chance to live.

good luck
