Ernest Hemingway’s Polydactal Cats

Hemingway fell in love with these polydactal cats which have 5 toes or 6. He was given one by a sea captain which he named Snow White. The sea captains believed they brought good luck on ships due to the extra digit on their paws making them good mousers and being able to stand firmly on a ship.

Hemingway got another white polydactyl cat and named it Snowball. He let it run wild on the island in the keys. There are now a well taken care of colony of these special cats at the Hemingway House.

Hemingway was a strange guy. I'm a fan of both he & F Scott as writers, but have mixed feelings when it comes to their treatment of Zelda ( wife of F Scott ).... it's difficult to explain, but this was one of his heartwarming stories. Thanks for sharing. I do think that quote holds so MUCH TRUTH! ♥️😼

I dont understand Hemingway

I don't think he understood himself. I've researched my writers well and read plenty of bios, so that's how I've gathered my speculations 🧐... you know how I am with trying to understand human behavior 😉

Thanks for BC🤗🌷

The second homeless mother and kittens family I took in, had that extra toe. They were all precious, but I fell in love with one kitten in particular. I forgot to hide him when 'interviewing' a couple who expressed interest in adopting one of the kittens, and they seemed so great I let them take him. Their young son chose that kitten. I always made sure I could contact those I surrendered an animal to, and I called them at least 3 times to check on that little guy I called Monkey, and ask if they were sure they wanted that particular kitten. The father was always nice, bless him.

I did know the story of the Hemingway cats, and had been to Key West once then. Although the Hemingway House and Museum was closed at the time, I did see some the cats who reside on and around there.

@Piper this is an amazing story. Im sorry you had to give up the kitten you wanted. But, it truly sounds like it went to a great home!! I would have loved to have had that kitten myself!! Its also great that you kept in contact with all the people that adopted from you!! You sound very pure in heart and soul!! Someone that truly cares!! 💖🤗

I would love to go key west to see these cats!! But, expenses are just too much. 😕 oh well, i love to hear stories such as yours!! Warms the heart!! ☺🙏
Awww….interesting piece of trivia, Indy…now I wish I could pet a kitty. 🐈☺️

@Vaper awesome!! But, a lot of people have told me its quite expensive there, so i wont be making the trip!! Even though i would love to!! ☺
Vaper · 36-40, M
@SW-User Sadly it was a bit pricey. Like damn near everything. And this was 4 years ago.

How adorable! I didn't know they had formed a colony! Wonderful story!
SW-User
@4meAndyou yeah, they live at the Hemingway House Museum and they have their own vet on staff. They are regularly taken care of medically. They are given checkups and regular shots. I love this story!! 😁😌

I absolutely love this little tidbit of Hemingway triva. He's my favorite. And his granddaughter is my mentor. ❤✍️
It happens with people, too.

I stayed on the island once. I did not see the House (honestly, I did not know there was one). I did see a few cats wandering around the streets. And chickens!
