Getting a pet is a form of self harm

Because they hardly ever outlive you. You basically choose to grieve in an unknown amount of time.

Just a thought..

MAYBE it would hurt them more to outlive us.

Yeah. After our last cat died, we vowed to never get another pet again, although it's entirely possible that one could outlive us at this point.

@DunningKruger I can't imagine life without a furry companion, but I also can't imagine going through all of this again if I can help it.

And don't you dare think of dying for atleast another 30 years, relatively young man!
@TheRealBarbossa Just think, though... in taking on another pet, you are saving life of another animal who might otherwise be sent to their forever sleep just because they couldn't find someone to love them and give them a safe place to live.

We don't treat humans like this just because they have no home or family to look after them.

@HootyTheNightOwl very true. Pantera was one of those pets before I hired her as my boss and best friend ❤

Parrots can live until their 70's I've been told. Tortoises can live for hundred of years, though they do get kinda big.

@ineedadrink I know, but they're not the most common pets.
Yeah, that's been on my mind when considering getting one too. In the end the love and joy you get before then is of course worth it, because that's the sole reason it's so painful. But yeah... you already know it's going to hurt badly eventually...

@NerdyPotato yeah, grief is the price of love

@TheRealBarbossa I don't like it.😞🌻
