My fellow cat owners: Has your cat ever suddenly just quit speaking?

My cat has been silent for nearly a week now…normally he’s not all that vocal except for feeding time, but now he’s just quiet all the time. Just to make sure he still has a voice, I brought him to the bathtub, and he was quite vocal about how he felt about that. So I’m not sure…is this something that older cats (he’s 15) just do sometimes?

Google states
As cats age, they often become less vocal and may meow less frequently than when they were younger.

Some cats are less vocal than others and rarely (if ever) meow. This is perfectly normal as long as they seem to be otherwise healthy. However if your cat used to meow and has suddenly stopped, this needs investigating. They could be suffering from stress, inflammation, infection, or even cancer.

@Gusman Thanks! I guess it’s time to schedule a vet visit.

@Zaphod42 A talk with a vet will most likely ease your concerns.

Boo cat is 17 she has only meowed when she's hungry and when we walk into the room she gives a cackle meow! She has stopped meowing and cackling at the birds. Which we loved to hear. But she still purrs heavy and her meows are strong for food!

In my experience older animals who normally likes to talk get less vocal when they are in pain.
