At Least My Oldest Parakeet, Ike, Didn’t Die…

He stopped eating Friday afternoon and just wanted to sleep all the time. Went 2 days with no food. I put extra vitamins in Smart Water hoping he would take a drink. Didn’t eat anything till sometime Monday. Started talking a bit and tried To play with a toy for a minute. Eating more today. Finally got his sass back asking “What do we get?” when I was cooking. He was less than 24 hours from death if he hadn’t started to eat yesterday

Oh no. But what was wrong with him, is the question. How do you know his issue was resolved altogether? I wonder why he stopped eating like that. Was his bowels normal or does he have diarrhea? I wonder if his digestive system is okay. That sounds concerning that he just quit eating like that. I had a parakeet for 10 years and we just loved him.

@LadyGrace he was t even using the bathroom. Just wanting to sleep all the time. I think he might have gotten dehydrated when he wasn’t eating or drinking and it made it worse. A pet store owner told me he had turned sick birds around sometimes just with giving them Smart Water, it has minerals in it. I told him I would give them vitamins if they would take a drink or two it usually got them to feeling better. Could have put a bit of colloidal silver in his water dish too but think he didn’t need it. I have some powdered bird probiotics I can put on his food too
@cherokeepatti yes, I was going to suggest colloidal silver in his water and I don't think it would still hurt. Maybe he had a little cold in his system or something but I think that would clean him out good. Yes, I like the probiotics idea. I'm so glad he's alright now.

@LadyGrace maybe low on vitamins, I don’t give them every day because they can get too much. Think once a week would be good especially for older birds. Also can buy molting food that has extra nutrients. These parakeets don’t want to eat fruit, they only want greens
When our parakeet had diarrhea one time we used Kaopectate and that really worked well.
@cherokeepatti I appreciate that information. I will try that. Yes I am certain it is very beneficial. I did have some okra at the Chinese restaurant one time. It wasn't bad at all. Sort of tasted like corn to me.
@cherokeepatti Reishi mushrooms are good for us, too. And Shataki.

@LadyGrace I have a tea blend with Reishi in it, used to get it at the big Viet Nam store in OKC for $1.99 a box and people would buy a dozen or more boxes if they found it stocked. I hadn’t seen it in several years and found it at another Asian store in south OKC and got a box.
Glad that he's eating again.

@BizSuitStacy They don’t even sell antibiotics for birds in the pet stores any more. You have to take them to a vet and they charge a lot. I keep colloidal silver on hand. Have given it to the birds and also the feral cat if it has a sore or cut
@cherokeepatti Yeah. I don't know how much people pay for parakeets today, but back in the day (30+ years ago), the veterinary costs greatly exceeded the cost of the bird

@BizSuitStacy It’s almost like paying for a doctor visit for dogs and cats at some places, probably the same with birds. And there’s a shorts of vets now so that factors in on the cost.

I've had many birds over the years and experienced near deaths. Its scary because you love them just as much as any other pet maybe even more.

@Stereoguy when he said “What do we get?” Last night I figured he was feeling much better. Takes some energy to complain as much as he does.

@Stereoguy he was wanting greens. I wish he’d eat apple or other fruits too. But it’s always greens he wants.
