At Least My Oldest Parakeet, Ike, Didn’t Die…

He stopped eating Friday afternoon and just wanted to sleep all the time. Went 2 days with no food. I put extra vitamins in Smart Water hoping he would take a drink. Didn’t eat anything till sometime Monday. Started talking a bit and tried To play with a toy for a minute. Eating more today. Finally got his sass back asking “What do we get?” when I was cooking. He was less than 24 hours from death if he hadn’t started to eat yesterday

Glad that he's eating again.

@BizSuitStacy They die if they go 72 hours without eating
@cherokeepatti Wow. I've never had birds as pets, but would see them as patients ovcasionally when I worked for a veterinarian. I remember something about their metabolisms and needing regular nutrition.

@BizSuitStacy yeah they have a very fast metabolism and can lose weight quickly. I
Might need to get him some honey seed sticks or something
@cherokeepatti It's good you're knowledgeable about birds. I don't remember seeing parakeets. We did see parrots, macaws and a couple of cockatoos. I remember tube feeding them a few times. I was much more comfortable with dogs and cats. LOL

@BizSuitStacy They don’t even sell antibiotics for birds in the pet stores any more. You have to take them to a vet and they charge a lot. I keep colloidal silver on hand. Have given it to the birds and also the feral cat if it has a sore or cut
@cherokeepatti Yeah. I don't know how much people pay for parakeets today, but back in the day (30+ years ago), the veterinary costs greatly exceeded the cost of the bird

@BizSuitStacy It’s almost like paying for a doctor visit for dogs and cats at some places, probably the same with birds. And there’s a shorts of vets now so that factors in on the cost.
