It’s so weird. I’ll just be going about my getting for bed ritual.

Like, taking some meds. Muting the tv and turning the captions on. Turning on the fan.

And suddenly the most random memory will hit me… like back in the early 2000’s when I used to stay up until 4am doing voice chat with some of the members of a WinMX chat room.

There were two dudes in particular who I was really close with. They were Canadians and roommates. Wow. I can’t recall what day of the week it is, but I remember their names were Shawn and Gary and I had the biggest crush on Gary. One night it was just us left in the voice chat, and I distinctly recall him saying my name and telling me to go to bed even though I was too excited to be alive to go to sleep (I didn’t have a social life at all back then).

Anyway, good times as I prayed the AOL free trial discs never stopped providing that magically slow dial-up. Can’t believe I’d wait 30+ minutes for the downloads of Missy Elliott songs.

I did too. Finding new music online was amazing! Random story...in late 90s I sold my old PC to a coworker. When he came to pick it up, last minute I threw an AOL CD into the box. Couple months later, he told me his wife left him. I asked, what happened? He said, She met someone on AOL !!!

@PerfectionOfTheHeart It was crazy, I never knew if he realized I threw the CD in the box...Thanks for BC!

You know, only recently did aol discontinue their dial up service
PerfectionOfTheHeart · 46-50, F
@Ferric67 Yeah, I remember reading that. The end of an era, man. I couldn’t imagine running on dial-up these days. Websites have too much pizazz and my patience is definitely not what it used to be.

I like your voice too much.
I’d probably never ask you to hang up.

30+ minutes? 😅 I waited months for peers to start uploading my favorite band's DVD so I could download. Since it was a video, no shortcuts either, it had to be downloaded whole in order to work. And then finally the Day D when it was fully downloaded. 🤩 Not that anything would change in this regard but I'm simply not interested in anything particular like I used to. Unavailable? Whatever, next...I'm not turning the internet upside down just to find something specific anymore.

@CrazyMusicLover Haha that sweet victory.

My gosh, did we scour the earth with ease back then, like a side quest became THE quest. And we did it happily with dramatic Lord of the Rings music playing in the background.

Now something falls behind the couch and we’re like, “Fuck it. I’ll buy another one.”
This made me smile as you let the dork flag fly.

I never had AOL and rarely visited chat rooms. Most of the time they annoyed me. 😄 I do remember our dot matrix printer. I can still hear the sound it made, that, and the dial-up modem sound.

@ChampagneOnIce Preach.

@PerfectionOfTheHeart Epson still makes dot matrix printers! Oh, the nostalgia! 😆

Every white dude in Canada is named Shawn or Gary
DownTheStreet · 56-60, M
@PerfectionOfTheHeart there’s only about 100 of them
PerfectionOfTheHeart · 46-50, F
@DownTheStreet Was hoping there were only about five. Any more than that and I’ll get distracted and forget why I’m even on a search.
