I just don't get it

Top | New | Old
Yeah, I don't get the whole "don't speak ill of the dead" thing. Why are we supposed to ignore all the horrible things someone did and start complimenting them the second they pass away? (Not just with Charlie but with everyone.)
FoxyQueen · 51-55, F
@NerdyPotato That is a really old school mentality because the dead can no longer defend themselves.

Which, who cares. They should have been heavily challenged in life. These days, most are and still show they are garbage. Especially today where every website is a platform to speak freely.

If I thought someone was horrible in life, I'm not gonna stop just because they're dead. Just ask my mom about my thoughts on my grandma for proof.
@FoxyQueen yeah, so what if they can't defend themselves? I wouldn't be talking badly about them if they weren't a horrible person. They made their choice during their lifetime.

@FoxyQueen @NerdyPotato "Don't speak ill of the dead"

**Enter Jimmy Savile**

Yeah, don't speak ill of the dead now... I hid my crimes when I was alive.

If you're at war, there are typically rules of engagement. Do not target medics, medical infrastructure, journalists, or civilians - especially children. Don't use chemical weapons. There's a bunch.

If side 1 respects these rules and follows them carefully, and side 2 refuses to, who has the advantage?
FoxyQueen · 51-55, F
@CountScrofula I don't understand what this question/scenario has to do with blatantly ignoring someone's rascist, bigoted and hateful behavior and words and calling such a person a "great guy"?

Can you explain the correlation?
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
@FoxyQueen It's a metaphor for political conflict.

There's similar rules of engagement, right. Go and scream at each other in the house or your parliament, and then go have a beer afterwards and agree to disagree. If someone shot Colbert back in the Colbert Report days, George W Bush would have been at the funeral guaranteed. George W Bush is an evil, evil man. But he'd follow those rules. If someone shot Colbert today, Trump would go golfing.

The entire basis of MAGA is getting rid of those rules in pursuit of power. Nothing matters but winning, control, and destroying the enemy. Charlie Kirk was a key part of that, per your quote, he pushed for political violence.

Part of their game is then requiring the other side follow those old rules. They don't have to do shit, but you MUST show sympathy, sorrow, gratitude, and respect.

They do that because it makes their opponents weaker. It's a trap.

@CountScrofula Got it. Thank you for taking the time to explain!
He didn’t kill anyone nor did he condone killing. Yet, he was killed by someone that could not tolerate him speaking words he disagreed with. He WAS yet another victim of the intolerant Left…

@FoxyQueen JFK tried to unite a country in one common goal, this man was sowing hate and division.

@JimboSaturn Not to meantion, his good works of "trying to spark debate in young adults" really amounted to bullying teenagers.
