I don't get all this comments. If you meet someone in rl you also greet with hey or how are u doing and you most likely say hi back.

@Vestorius I think we react to DMs differently than real life. If you encounter someone on the street who says “Hey!” and you say “Hi,” it’s not an agreement between the two people.
A DM that says, “Hey!” Is like somebody running down the street ringing doorbells. If you open the door, you may have to deal with the person on a protracted basis.
Far better to say, Hey! I liked your such-and-such post and would like to get to know you.

@Vestorius Hi .... it's not quite like passing someone on the street and saying hey. We do that (when passing someone on the street) as a courtesy and to show ourselves as a polite non-threatening person, to acknowledge one another as co-inhabitants of this earth. They respond with their own hey to confirm they are likewise.
Saying hey here is more like tapping someone on the shoulder before saying hey, so you probably need more than just hey to explain why you singled them out to say hey.
