For about 7 months, my brother had a terrible custody battle with his ex leaving their daughter in a sort of limbo school wise. She thought it was great that she didn't have to go to school. What 12 year old does.
So I bought all the books for year 8 Maths, English, Science. And set her assignments to do herself since I was going to college 4 days a week myself. On my days off. Field Trip!
