Because society was inundated with religious fanaticism. People believing very stupid things on 0 evidence. Combine that with bigotry, you get witch burnings

Same thing can be said about how Christians killed Jews over allegations that they mistreated pieces of bread that represent the body of Jesus.

@WaryWitchWandering true and in other societies. I remember reading how a woman was accused of witch craft and killed by Saudi Arabia... In the 21st century 😬..., a country that is still gripped by religious fundamentalism.
