Why did people burn witches in the past?

And why no one talks about it .
WaryWitchWandering · 36-40, F
@QueenOfTheNerds love this
NickiHijab · F
They weren't even 'witches'
Just women with opinions.
Torsten · 36-40, M
@XDHyperGirlXD1
men back then didnt like women being smarter than them either
respectively were they smarter though? men were not the ones being burnt alive were they?
XDHyperGirlXD1 · 31-35, F
@Torsten men was the ones doing it lol
Torsten · 36-40, M
@XDHyperGirlXD1 and other women
deadgerbil · 22-25, F
Because society was inundated with religious fanaticism. People believing very stupid things on 0 evidence. Combine that with bigotry, you get witch burnings

Same thing can be said about how Christians killed Jews over allegations that they mistreated pieces of bread that represent the body of Jesus.
WaryWitchWandering · 36-40, F
@deadgerbil happens still today in different ways
deadgerbil · 22-25, F
@WaryWitchWandering true and in other societies. I remember reading how a woman was accused of witch craft and killed by Saudi Arabia... In the 21st century 😬..., a country that is still gripped by religious fundamentalism.

To see if they were made of wood
XDHyperGirlXD1 · 31-35, F
they though women was witches because they didnt think a woman could be smarter than them and they shouldnt have opinions D:
The Old Testament made women second class and dependent to men.

Kill female witches (not male)
Exodus 22:18 “Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.” KJV (The NRSV has “female sorcerers.” This one verse has resulted in the deaths of many thousands of women through history.)

They didn’t swallow
Notsimilar · 31-35, F
Its probably not talked about much because it's so shameful and cruel and wrong

For ignorance, superstition, the power of religion
Adstar · 56-60, M
Because they believed Evil people should be executed..

The actual form of execution was selected because it is a terrifying way to die.. Not because they wanted to kill someone in a horrific way but because they wanted the people who viewed such an execution to be so fearful of dying that way that they would not take part in wicca..

It's pretty simple to answer this one really..
Torsten · 36-40, M
witches were everywhere. had to thin the herd I suppose
men were afraid they would give them crystal balls

Because we.. I mean.. they were too intelligent and clever for our... I mean their... own good.

Witch actually means "clever woman"
I tried finding proof of that online, but I'm neither patient nor sober enough to find any.
ozgirl512 · 26-30, F
@BarbossasHusband i believe it comes from wicca, or vice a versa lol
BarbossasHusband · 36-40, M
@ozgirl512 You're probably right.
People definitely talk about it
eli1601 · 70-79, M
To roast marshmallows
ozgirl512 · 26-30, F
Run out of firewood?🤔
Viper · M
Some talk about it, it's not like a taboo subject or anything.

They burned people because they were scared of witches, though most of whom got accused of witch craft were just people that had haters.
SteelHands · 61-69, M
Those who tell histories always trifle with the powerlessness and gullibility of the weak minded.

Some people believe anything just because someone wrote it down.
smiler2012 · 56-60
maybe through religious reasons and pure ignorance and cruel methods used to contract a confession. [freydis]
InHeaven · F
Power and politics. They probably don’t talk about it because for all the cruel murder Jesus Christ gets blamed every time.
Tukudo · 41-45, M
Men can't tolerate Women getting intelligent and superior! That's why it happened.😐
Torsten · 36-40, M
@Tukudo wow sounds like complete horse shit
exexec · 61-69, C
They burned "heretics", too. Although later the Church often said, "Oops. Our mistake."

🤔
I’m guessing they didn’t taste good raw 🤷‍♂️
Plenty of people talk about it. There are quite a few documentaries about it, both as it happened in the U.S. and all throughout Europe. The ‘why’ would be a combination of religious fanaticism and cultural misogyny.

I'm guessing a strong minded women is seen as a threat, which isn't acceptable in a male dominated society
caccoon · 36-40
Because men
That was more of a 90s thing. These days it's atheism they weaponize against the church
Justenjoyit · 56-60, M
