I think multiple reasons can apply but mainly these days it is to besmirch another person or group.

@Swoop62 no you’re fine for using the word! I just lived abroad for a few decades. I looked it up trying to find the origin but it doesn’t really say.
I think a lot of people play the victim because they feel like victims, because life is pain. I think everybody’s a victim. But some survive better than others.

@Ferise1 I do not know the origin but just the meaning in how I used it. I would not disagree with your analysis of your thoughts on that. But I add to that with some set out with the intent of playing the victim in order to shade another person or group to make them appear as the bad guy..
