Once, for two weeks, when I was 16, with my mother and younger sister.
We were typical tourists - which I feel embarassed about because tourism is such a shallow way to see a country.
In Bangkok I loved the Buddhist temples, the market places, and a performance of classical music and dance.
The cooked food had too much chilli for me, so I ate fruit, peeling it myself to avoid catching any stomach bugs.
Given that chilli was originally a South American plant, I wonder how it arrived in Southeast Asia, and how it became so popular that food without it is considered bland or tasteless.
In Chen Mai, I loved a Buddhist monastery, a water fall and traditional hilltribe dancers and their music.
In my thirties, I did my first 10 day course in Vipassana, and discovered it as a reliable path for a better life.
My favourite Buddhist teacher, Pannya Varro, is an Australian ordained in the Thai forrest tradition.
He founded a monastery 2 hrs drive from where I live and, even in his 80s, continues to teach.
I feel a little sad that I never had the chance to get to know the real Thailand.

The closest I got was when I drove along the southern border with Malaysia in 1993.
Here in Australia we have road signs with Kangaroos on them. At the border there were road signs with Elephants on them.
Whilst driving in the early morning, before sun up we were stopped by Malaysian Border Security personnel and had our vehicle thoroughly searched.
