Loss can be a terrible trauma and really mess up a person's ego, courage, belief in life and themselves. Such losses can totally trash someone's whole desire for life and all they used to enjoy - it's like the light goes out.
It can affect their ability to interact with people.
As to language - it changes over time .
Just as lol once meant 'laugh out loud', now it more communicates 'slight amusement'.
Meanings change .
Language is primarily for communication.
If we get the gist of something, then communication achieved.
If we get to hung up on details we have the ability to think past or think around, we can get sidetracked or lose the focus of the topic .
I see your point he's struggling.
And his written form isn't perfect .
