I wouldn't stop being a friend but I wouldn't enable destructive behaviour.
One thing I've noticed is empathy can easily shift to enabling if you're swayed purely by the emotion of the situation. I'm at a point in my life where I'm starting to draw a line. People take advantage of it. I can't enable self destruction but I wouldn't drop a friend in need wherever else I could help.
