There are two schools of thought, one saying we have a secret space program which tells us we have been back to the moon and even Mars while establishing bases there.
The other school of thought was the moon landing was a faked Stanley Kubrick Hollywood production. And that the Van Allen belts are the obstacle which prevents us from ever getting there.

There was no money. The Space Shuttle and International Space Station ate all of the money for NASA's manned space program. NASA's budget is tiny today, compared to the Apollo days, as a percentage of the US budget.

I’m pretty sure it’s because there’s nothing valuable there. And that it wasn’t made of cheese.
Going to the moon was mostly about one nation proving to another that their technology was superior I think. Once that point was proved, there was no sense in spending a shitload of money by keeping on going there.
