Cave of the Crystals, Naica Mexico

Was reading about this place in a book.
Giant selenite crystals produced through magma heat and pressure. Until 24 years ago the chambers were full of water, but they were drained by mining companies because apparently the water from the caves was draining into newly dug silver and zinc mines. Without the water the crystals are deteriorating in the hot dry air and scientists are trying to study the caves as quickly as they can. Special refrigerated suits are needed as the temps down there can rise to 136 degrees.

As beautiful and magical as this is to look at it's just typical of Man that something so special that's been around for half a million years will eventually end up as another casualty of modern practices.

I'm curious how this selenite was underwater. It is one of the minerals known to dissolve when it gets wet. Hmmm, must research.

Beautiful, yet a sad story to this caves demise.
humans are destroying and making the earth hotter while blaming it on global warming.

we are removing every mineral the earth uses to keep itself cool and then scratching our heads in bafflement wondering why we are having such drastic environmental impacts.

@deathfairy I just read more about it and the water is rising again and they'll drain it again because the mountain still has more they can use. We're gonna be a star before long.
