Very interesting column like formations in Mars rocky Mountains !

A picture taken with the Curiosity Rovers extra zoom enhancement tool of far away mountains of Mars. In the cliff like stone walls of those mountains there can be seen some very interestin column like structures craved into the stone, much like The Petra Castles on Earth, Jordan.

What do you guys think ?

They look very much like fairly ordinary sedimentary rock structures, so nothing exceptional but still very interesting geologically.

The arch-like feature in the centre seems to be a scar left by a slab peeling away.

erosion me thinks
Parlisa · 22-25, F
@Convivial It could be, but its more possible that those formations are ruins of an ancient civilisation called Aw Anki !

@Parlisa possible, but highly unlikely...i prefer to run these kinds of questions through Occam's razor..

Tectonic movement .
Parlisa · 22-25, F
@Max41 Mars do not have tectonic movement.

@Parlisa Every planet has .

I love seeing the geology of other rocky planets. The Pluto ones were incredible I thought. And the ones of other moons too.

Perhaps that was once an ocean cliff and you're seeing erosion. Imaging the creatures that could live there.

Petra? How hard are you squinting?
Parlisa · 22-25, F
@Morvoren Huh ? 😯
Morvoren · F
@Parlisa It could be me missing it but I can’t see anything look remotely-
Parlisa · 22-25, F
@Morvoren Yes, exactly ! The one on mars is ruined and eroded after millions of years ...
Could be columnar basalt, which can be found many places on Earth.

@ElwoodBlues Interesting suggestion - yes, it could..

It's fascinating to think what else this rover will capture

It looks like a natural formation to me
