Charges have been laid against an Alberta man in connection with what RCMP call “a series of intentionally set wildfires,” as well as several arsons to vehicles, homes and a church.
Cold Lake RCMP, the RCMP serious crimes branch, the forestry crimes unit (FCU) and investigators from Alberta Forestry and Parks and Tourism worked together to investigate a series of intentionally set wildfires that occurred between August and September of 2022, as well as vehicles and structures set on fire in the Hamlet of Cherry Grove in April 2023.
An investigation began in August 2022 into several wildfires in the Hilda Lake, Cold Lake Provincial Park, Ardmore and Cherry Grove areas. Officials determined the fires were suspicious and that they had been intentionally set."

Italy police use drone to catch suspected arsonist in the act as wildfires char Calabria
BY CHRIS LIVESAYJULY 27, 2023 / 1:00 PM / CBS NEWS
"Rome — Police in southern Italy believe they've captured a serial arsonist thanks to an unexpected hero — a drone. Since early July, the Calabria region has been besieged by a series of devastating wildfires.
A breakthrough came after local law enforcement decided to enlist the help of a high-resolution camera drone with thermal imaging capabilities. According to police, the drone detected a thermal anomaly — a figure fleeing a nascent fire on a motorcycle through a remote field.
"Calabria is a civilized region, but it also has some imbeciles who go to set fires in the woods, like this arsonist we caught yesterday," Roberto Occhiuto said in a video shared on social media. "Where does he come from, the caves?"

The incident occurred on Monday at approximately 1:46 p.m. when the Curry County Sheriff’s Office received a call reporting active fires near Mariel Lodge and Rogue River Ranch located in deep southwest Oregon in an area that is only accessible by river or by Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management roads, according to a statement posted by Curry County Sheriff John Ward on social media."

Alberta woman faces 32 arson charges after wildfire investigation
Offences took place over the span of two months, RCMP sayCBC News · Posted: Jun 04, 2021 12:19 PM CDT | Last Updated: June 4, 2021
"RCMP have charged a woman with 32 counts of arson after investigating a string of suspicious northeast Alberta wildfires.
The charges facing the 54-year-old woman from Glendon, Alta., are connected to numerous wildfires in the Bonnyville and Lac La Biche areas in April and May, RCMP said in a news release Friday.
On April 24, fire and forestry authorities responded to multiple wildfires in the forest protection area northwest of Bonnyville and east of Lac La Biche. The RCMP Forestry Crimes Unit determined the cause of the fire was arson and identified a suspect.
Then, on May 27, authorities were called to seven wildfires northwest of Bonnyville. RCMP say officers then found and arrested the 54-year-old woman. At the time of her arrest, four wildfires were burning nearby and a total of 19 fires had been started over the course of a few hours, RCMP said."

Of course, some fires have natural causes but it is a serious mistake not to consider humans as a possible cause as well. In the case of lightning strikes, maybe some very tall lightning rods placed throughout the forest might be effective in reducing the fires. But, some people claim that forest fires are necessary to keep the forests healthy.
