I Still Remember September 11

I live in New York, but I don't live in the city. I can still remember that day very well. It was scary.
I live near Canada and right on the boarder. Where I live there is a shipping channel that cargo ships pass through from here into Canada. Shortly after September 11th a list of possible terrorist sites were listed for possible attacks in the US. We were #9 on the list of the top 10 most likely places to be attacked by terrorists.

A great fear from terrorism rose greatly in this country after September 11, 2001.

I remember exactly what I was doing that day. I was a stay-at-home-mom back then, my children were young when it happened. They don't really remember much of it, but they have heard many stories and studied about it also in high school. It's being taught in schools now as part of American History.

I think many Americans remember exactly what they were doing that day. I know I do. I was bringing my 2 oldest to school that day. My oldest was starting kindergarten and my youngest had his first day at Head Start, he was 4 at the time. I remember flipping through the channels to find a cartoon for my youngest child (she was 2 at the time)
As I began flipping through the channels I saw the world trade center up in smoke. I had no idea what happened until I saw the news of it on a different channel. At first I didint pay too much attention to it, because they weren't giving any details in the report on the news.
I proceeded to take my boys to school and when I got to the school that was all anyone was talking about. That's when they said it was a terrorist attack. They said that 2 planes had been highjacked and the other plane was unknown. That was the one that crashed in the field.
As the events unfolded that day it was on every single channel on television. By the time my husband got home from work that night the towers were gone!

Our country came together that day and mourned for all the lives that were lost that day. We honored the heros and all the volunteers that came to help that day. The clean up from that horrific day went on for months. Donations poured in from all countries around the world. This day will always be remembered.

I have seen a lot of documentaries about 9/11 and have read the many different stories that people share about it.

I have had the pleasure of going to the memorial site where the towers once stood. I saw it before the Freedom Tower was built. While it was still under construction. It was 2009 when I went to NYC and saw this site. It had walls of memories for all those who parishes that day.

I think everyone has their own story of what they were doing that day. Would you care to share yours?

I have noticed here in SW many folks are sharing their own, I thought I would share mine.

Thanks for reading and sharing.

I was on my way to work when it happened. I stopped for coffee at the convenience store near my house, and the clerk told me he heard an airplane hit a skyscraper in New York. I remember thinking it was a small private plane, and I told him that was awful. I pictured a tiny plane bouncing off the side of a building. I just didn't understand the scope of what had happened.

I had a long drive to work, and the radio was on. The announcer broke into the program I was listening to, and told us that an airplane had just hit the Pentagon. I went into shock. I remember feeling hot and then cold, with a massive sense of unreality. I looked up just then and huge passenger planes were flying so low in the sky above me I could have counted the windows, flying in to Logan. My shock deepened. I had never seen that before. It looked like war.

I got in to work, and I remember my son was working in the Hancock tower in Boston, and we didn't know if they would also attack Boston. I started crying, because I didn't know if my son was all right. Later I found out that the Hancock tower had been evacuated, and my son was fine.

I stayed in a state of semi-shock for a long time. I started watching the news obsessively. I couldn't stop. As the story unfolded, it was worse and worse.

Here where I live, there were born people who worked in the Twin Towers. There is a bench dedicated to them now on a walkway near our waterfront. In my town there is a memorial to 9/11 which I have visited.

Today is a day of remembrance of a great American tragedy, and remembrance of great American love and courage.

I went into work early that morning and didn't realize what was going on until someone showed up and told me a plane had crashed into the WTC. My first thought was a small Cessna had accidentally crashed into it, so I kept working. When someone came in and told me a second plane had crashed into the WTC, I ran out to find a television with the news on ( this was before smartphones). I remember a cold chill going over my entire body as I watched the images of smoke and carnage, the realization that this was no accident washing over me. My first thoughts were of a friend who worked at the WTC. I called another friend to see if they had heard from them, and then we took turns trying to get in touch. An awful, sick feeling began to surface as the buildings crumbled to the ground.
Thankfully, we heard from our friend that evening. He got to work late and by the time he emerged from the subway, the first building had been hit. He smartly decided to not go into the second tower, where he worked, and made his way uptown by foot. He said the sound of the second plane crashing was one of the loudest, most terrifying sounds he has ever heard. He thought he felt the heat from the explosion from where he was. To this day, he doesn't like talking about it.
@NewKidInTown I have a friend who's husband was there in NYC on that day and to my knowledge he even went to help. I don't know his story buy I know he did suffer from PTSD from that day. I am sure it was terrifying for anyone who was in the city the day that happened. That day sent fear across the country.
