School Vouchers

I just heard that Kamala, and Democrat politicians, do not want school vouchers.

I have read that this is great for kids, especially underprivileged kids. Why would
someone be against it? Is it because Republican are FOR it?
Thinkerbell · 41-45, F
The teachers' unions are against vouchers because they want your tax money whether your kids are in the public school system or not.

Preferably if not... that means more money and less work for the public school teachers.
HobNoblin · 36-40, M
@Thinkerbell They want your children in their indoctrination centers too.
@HobNoblin And just how are charter schools indoctrination centers, hmmm?
DogMan · 61-69, M
@badminton Ok, lets go back to the curriculum we had when you and I were in school.

That would solve many of the problems.

Back before participation trophies, when we learned what it was like to lose.

And back before Time-outs, that did nothing to teach a lesson.
This is an issue I see both sides on. Vouchers for private schools can hurt public schools.

Honestly, I'm not thrilled with having the Federal government making any big decisions on those, because it seems like a really local issue.

I would have loved to have them when I put my kids through private schools, but I only did that because the public schools were so bad.
@DogMan one way to look at this is to see who is doing better. Are public schools academically superior in results than charter schools?
DogMan · 61-69, M
@soar2newhighs Right, we all know charter schools are superior, so it makes you wonder
why some people are against it.
@DogMan It seems silly to say "not all charters," but it's true. Where I used to live (I'm actually in a suburb now), they shut down the entire public school system and went almost fully charters.

Mostly it was better than before), but some charters failed and we've had issues dealing with regulating charters, which continue even after some but not all public schools have reopened.

My point is, I really think this is an issue that needs, at a minimum a lot of local flexibility rather than a one size fits all Federal approach.
DogMan · 61-69, M
Hopefully Charter schools do not give out participation trophies for kids that lose.

Kids need to learn that there are times they win, and times they lose. This helps
them grow into stable adults.

@DogMan unfortunately, that is why charter schools exist. Child can’t cut it in public school, so mom and dad shop around for a school that better fits their child’s needs.

When school choice programs began decades ago, they were primarily meant to assist low-income families seen to be trapped in failing local public schools and students with disabilities. But the new vouchers in many cases lift — or even eliminate — household income caps, giving wealthier families state cash to send their kids to private schools.

With enrollment surging in these programs — which Republicans say shows how desperate families are for more education choices — early data shows that students in some of these states aren’t leaving their public schools for private options. Instead, most scholarships are going to incoming kindergarteners and students already enrolled in private schools.

Democrats and teachers unions have blasted the vouchers as handouts to wealthy families that don’t need the assistance. The programs have also caused a fissure among Republicans, most notably in Texas, with lawmakers representing rural areas where private schools are scarce and public schools are a bedrock of the local economy often opposing the initiatives

FEDERAL money is allocated based on how many students are attending public schools. Public schools are full of sub-par teachers...the equivalent of lazy college professors on tenure who feel as though they no longer need to try.

On the ballot in MASSACHUSETTS this election, public schools NO LONGER WANT TO REQUIRE STUDENTS TO PASS THE MCAS EXAM in order to graduate high school. The fuzzy warm "feeling" behind this, is that school work and course tests during the year are "enough", and this gives our "hard-working" teachers the opportunity to concentrate more on "teaching critical thinking" and creativity.

In other words, teachers will no longer have to try at all. If a student is just not learning, they can decide to PASS/FAIL him right out the door.

Presently IF parents want to move their children out of unhealthy public school environments they can NOT. Not unless school vouchers become the law of the land.

ALSO, inside public schools, you will find the gender confusion issue rampant. Many parents don't want their children exposed to that at all...school vouchers give parents a choice.

General taxes should not fund private schools.
@badminton That can and should apply to many things. No taxes for many things.
DogMan · 61-69, M
I believe that the low-income, and disabled kids should be helped first. They are the
ones usually trapped in failing schools. Maybe as classroom sizes get smaller in
public schools, they will improve.
@DogMan If you’re a politician and you are adept as is your party at using certain groups to keep voting for your political ilk, you will effectively control them through “ programs” that you expect to keep
them where you want them .
DogMan · 61-69, M
@soar2newhighs That is very true. But at some point people have to realize what
is in their best interest.

They don’t want charter schools either.
DogMan · 61-69, M
@soar2newhighs Republican-controlled legislatures in Florida, Iowa, Arkansas and elsewhere passed massive expansions to school vouchers this year, fueled by anger over pandemic-era school closures and disagreements over what kids are taught.
@DogMan I have a good memory of Obama touting D.C. public school while his daughters went to an elite private school. And he was no fan of charter schools.

It's a selfish endeavor - generally when you spread resources amongst too many parallel endeavors the quality of all suffers.

the idea was to give parents an options out of the "failing education system", but the result was making that failing education system worse in the long run. Test scores are certainly reflecting that.
Have you ever noticed that it's the Minorities that went to charter schools are the ones that are leaving the dem party in droves.
DogMan · 61-69, M
@NativePortlander1970 No wonder Democrats hate charter schools.
@DogMan Exactly, they're taught to think for themselves.
