Interesting Facts About My Parents Generation
Interesting facts about WWII and my parent’s generation. I’m the youngest in their family and they were the youngest in their families… so here I am, a bit of an anachronism having lost three uncles in the War. I’m a Canadian… per capita we lost more people in WWII than did the US. But this is not a pissing match about how many corpses we piled up. We fought side-by-side. I’ve been to Juno Beach – it’s literally a 5-minute drive from Arromanches and Omaha Beach. There was no difference in our courage because we fought together against tyranny and oppression. There was no question about such things as the Jewish Holocaust, for example; because we liberated those camps together and we witnessed the atrocities.
I know Donald Trump is a troll, and I don’t hate the guy at all; in fact, I agree with him more than 50% of the time… which is more than I can say about our own leaders here in Canada. We had some terrible leadership in this country under Justin Trudeau… he’s a national embarrassment.
But… we aren’t at war. I know it plays well politically all this ‘elbows-up’ rhetoric, and it’s not helpful that DT renames our shared great lakes. And we shouldn’t turn our collective back on history. My father worked for the US military in the Canadian north on the Distant-Early-Warning line, because even during the cold war, we understood who the enemy was… we always did… and it wasn’t each other.
So, I am not proud of Mark Carney and I’m not proud of Doug Ford… but I am proud of my neighbours (with a ‘u’). Because if you needed a shirt, we’d take it off our own backs and give it to you. All this political posturing is hurting everyday people and I am at a loss to figure out how this benefits anyone.
Can we do better than this? I visited the graves of all my uncles and clearly they thought so.
