What is the difference between sharpshooter and sniper?

Sharpshooter is mid-level markmanship ranking using a rifle. Sniper is a highly skilled shooter trained to kill from hidden locations.

@BrandNewMan Ah, finally someone who was in -- or knows -- the military. I have a sharpshooter's medal awarded in Army proficiency testing, which everyone has to take. Sniper's proficiency is far above that, with different weapons, and additional training as to concealment, targeting, etc., for the sole purpose of killing from a distance. Although originally military, they also are used by Secret Service and law enforcement SWAT teams in civilian roles.
