The world is forgetting again...

Why are they selling poppies, Mummy?
Selling poppies in town today.
The poppies, child, are flowers of love.
... For the men who marched away.

... ... But why have they chosen a poppy, Mummy?
Why not a beautiful rose?
Because my child, men fought and died
In the fields where the poppies grow.

But why are the poppies so red, Mummy?
Why are the poppies so red?
Red is the colour of blood, my child.
The blood that our soldiers shed.

The heart of the poppy is black, Mummy.
Why does it have to be black?
Black, my child, is the symbol of grief.
For the men who never came back.

But why, Mummy are you crying so?
Your tears are giving you pain.
My tears are my fears for you my child.
For the world is forgetting again.

In Flanders Fields
John McCrae - 1872-1918

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
The sorrow, the suffering, the glory, the shame,
The killing and dying, it was all done in vain,
Oh Willie McBride, it all happened again,
And again, and again, and again, and again.

Sad, but true.
It seems fitting that the author of this poem is unknown.

"For the world is forgetting again"

Isn't it just 😪

I haven't forgotten. I once wrote my own poem after talking with a veteran at a grocery store. He left his mark in my memory and heart.
I wish this world didn't forget about ways to help when the veterans are home... many without enough money to get by.
@SW-User YES.

They even have had all kinds of problems just getting the health care which they are due, for decades, THAT makes me convinced it is *systemic* and we need to disband most of the VA health system (hospitals sprinkled at wide intervals, etc.), keep any specialized knowledge we can, but put the vets on "Military Medicare" to just let them get treatment more conveniently.

@SomeMichGuy As for anyone who needs medical treatment... just giving medicare isn't enough if they still have to fight for a doctor appointment.
My sister's husband was denied many things he should have had while he was alive. After he died, he received plenty of help, sent to his home with his name... like they didn't even have a clue he died and it didn't matter anymore.
@SW-User Yes, but that's because the VA Health system has too few physicians and the locations are very scattered.

If they had a supply of doctors & locations such that the supply were greater than the demand, no problems.

Send most of the VA docs, etc., into the medicare system and let military vets just go into medicare instead of the obviously understaffed/inefficient VA system.

We're throwing good taxpayer money after bad to keep trying to keep the VA health system running.
@SW-User That's cute AND touching.

@SomeMichGuy I thought so too
