I Hate War
I served. It was near the end of the second world war, and I was required to - and I also felt it was my duty. And I think I did it well.
And I suppose I think that in those circumstances, it was necessary. But it was still horrible, it was still awful.
It's impractical I know, but I've often felt that any politician who is in a position to make a decision to go to war should have had to experience it. Only then can somebody decide it the price is worth it.
And even if it is. It's a hideous price. It can only be justified by the genuine risk of something worse.
