@emmayoung If Mom is referring to the hairbrush, then it is clearly not true. A hairbrush spank does not hurt the spanker's hand at all but does sting major league the recipient.
If a mom intends "this" to refer to the whole event or the misbehavior, the reputation damage to the family, the complaints and bad mood of the recipient afterwards, (all the family events involved) then that mom might indeed have more "hurt" than the daughter getting the hairbrush spanking. All these forms of hurt or regrets are generally not physical. So, there remains the imbalance of physical pain with mental or psychological pain/regret.
Whatever truth there is in that remark, it fails to come close to matching the well-known intense agony a firm hairbrush spanking creates on a bare bottom.

That we are not brainwashed from the day we were born.
Proven fact that the fastest learning curve is when we were infants.
What is not discussed is what are they learning.
An infant can only learn from what it senses. And what it senses is the examples the care taker presents. Or forced examples of what should be correct behaviors.
If the infants doesn't sense the behaviors, they don't learn anything. Hence lack of brainwashing or lack of learning.
What we consider as right and wrong is learned or brainwashed at infancy.
