Should the news be allowed to lie?

And then again, whom gets to determine what is or isn't a lie?

I hate that "news" has the power to lie, as it spreads the lies.... then again, in Russia, they're not allowed to lie, but it's the Kremlin getting to decide what is and isn't a lie, and seen the Kremlin is lying and wants lies, the reality is because of the no lying rule, and a lying enforcer, the news can't tell the truth.

It's a catch 22, you're screwed either way...

So I guess the question if which do you trust more... the government to always tell the truth (nope) or the people to be able to differentiate between the truth and a lie (nope... but at least 35% will probably be able to figure it out).

Bingo, you just end up with govenrment control of media, and then its the governments lies.

"... but at least 35% will probably be able to figure it out."

But only if they have access to all points of view.

And since they don't in Russia, that's why 80% of the population support the war in Ukraine, according to polls.

Of course, they might also be aware of what might happen to them if they don't give the pollster the right answer.

@Thinkerbell Great points, though it also has sounded like more Russian might know, but they just can't publicly say it, which is why some reporters are allegedly voting with their feet to leave than to speak out.

Of course, I don't like that either, as it just leaves yes men to speak out...

The government and news will always lie, or spin the truth to benefit their agenda. They always have, it’s just very overt now, and has gotten worse than ever. They should be allowed to report what they want, but they should not be censoring the opposite voices and opinions. That’s called free speech. Speech isn’t free, when only one side gets to speak and determine truth and facts. That’s tyranny. Lies and truth, and whatever lay between are part of free speech. It’s up to us (education plays a big role in this) to think critically and decide what makes sense to us.
Nobody should be allowed to lie silly

@Viper Lava is my friend. she is very sweet. And I had no idea of her political leanings before this post. 🤗

Take the lies about the vaccine as an example. All those lies the media told us were lies were found to be true. You have to do your own research. See who sounds credible, and who doesn’t. See who makes money or gains power by a certain narrative, then decide for yourself. Same with Hunter Biden. We were told it was a Russian conspiracy, and that was lies. @TryingtoLava

@CactusJackManson she is extremely sweet!

After reading your question, I was mulling it over and so I did a brief search about the press, accountability, and recourse. It popped up this organization. Not sure how effective it is but, it is there.

@Freeranger I don't know, but it seems like most ethics thing for government or covering government is just an organization saying this is unethical, stop it now...

And they pretty much ignore it... and nothing happened.

I've heard this even being the case for coal mining in West Virginia... basically ethic group says the working conditions are unethical and not safe enough ... and throws their harshest fines at them, but they just pay the fines, because they're fairly small and keep going, because the fines are cheaper than the ethical solution.

And coal mining just threatens to shut down and stop paying politicians and workers if they don't keep the fines low.

It's basically like Congress gets to create their own rules, so literally it's the inmates running the asylum, literally!

It does no good...

No. News should present all knowledge about said subject.
Viper · M
@MrBrownstone Yeah, well, then news ain't news anymore, at least not in America, as it's gone much more cheap opinion based than any knowledge.
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
@Viper I know.
Torsten · 36-40, M
mainstream media is now just opinion based bias. There is no news anymore. Facts dont matter. Ratings do
TexChik · F
Didn’t Obama change the law allowing propaganda to be disseminated by the MSM in lieu of the truth? Change that and take away the 1A protections for big tech and watch the truth start being reported again
Viper · M
@TexChik Isn't it Congress' job to pass laws?

Get rid of protection for big tech and you'll have them moderating even more as they'll be liable for even more.

@TexChik for some reason your comment was muted... I assume sc$mb@gs word did it?

But either way, I don't specifically know which law you're referring too, but all the medias have gone to opinions over facts.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
I would hope that's a rhetorical question. News stations should just report the truth. Even putting a spin on the truth that your viewers are going to prefer could be considered a lie.
