A lot of people still haven’t got the memo on Columbus Day

Sure, Columbus was once a unanimously celebrated figure, but that was looking at him through rose-tinted glasses. We know better now — his actual story and the multiple accounts of him committing atrocious acts so inhumane, even his contemporaries thought he was nothing short of an unhinged monster, from his own crew to the Italian monarchy themselves. But don’t take my word for it, do your own research and you’ll see that Columbus is not a man worth celebrating, period.

Unless, of course, you do think such a sick, reprehensible individual should be celebrated for whatever reason! I know there will be plenty who will continue celebrating him anyway. But that’s okay, because it’s always good to know where people stand. And, once they’re gone, their world will go with them until they’re last generation upholding this farce while the rest of the world progresses and ultimately leaves Columbus Day in the past, where it belongs.

Yeah Columbos wasn't a saint.

However, neither were the Indigenous populations that he supposedly treated so badly.

Slavery, cannibalism, rape, incest, starvation and brutal violence were all regular parts of the behaviors of the indigenous populations.

I felt it needed mentioning, since your whole objection to Colombus was his violence and immorality.

Don't take my word for it! Do your own research.,

@SumKindaMunster And how does it make me hypocritical? Where did I say it’s okay if certain people do it but not when this guy does it? I’m not sure what you understand what hypocritical means.
PurpleBottom91 · 31-35, M
@SumKindaMunster leftists don’t have any standards except double standards, sir!

I myself wrote essay that debunked all Colombophobic lies back in 2022! https://substack.com/home/post/p-58648878 he uses real historians like I mentioned before: Ortiz, Delaney, GRABAR, royal, SCAFFETA, Di Giacomo, Flynn, WEIDENKOPF, BYAS, in Bowden, not to mention primary sources in full quotes to show how the first founding father in first civilization. Our country has been horribly maligned!

A lot of Italian-Americans basically celebrate Columbus Day as Italian-American Day. For most people, it isn't about the man, whom you correctly identify as a monster, or even what he did, which was opening the door for the European migration into the Americas.
DunningKruger · 61-69, M
@Ducky I don't disagree.

Still get a paid day off though huh? 😏 Will you take that if offered? I would if it were offered to me.

Columbus Day's creation had little to do with Columbus as a man and more to do with Benjamin Harrison trying to placate Italy and Italians after a mass lynching of Italians in the US...

"A mass lynching of Italians in New Orleans in 1891 led to President Benjamin Harrison creating Columbus Day in hopes of repairing international relations. Eleven Italian-American immigrants were killed downtown in what remains one of the country's largest single lynchings. Italy cut off diplomatic relations with the U.S in the aftermath and there was talk of war, according to the Washington Post."

@Ducky Whatever that was. Things never seem to show up in order here.

I ❤ Columbus! Brought civilization to a savage primitive land. Helped create the first world!
Zonuss · 46-50, M
@PurpleBottom91 Lie. There was colonization. No colonizers were not nice. They abused women....stole resources....brainwashed ...and homogenized cultures and tribes for personal gain. Columbus was no different. ☺

Shouldn't people be judged within the context of their times?
PurpleBottom91 · 31-35, M
@BohoBabe if you really cared about context dummy, you realize that the negative statements made by Christopher Columbus like that he was genocidal a slave, a pedophile, etc. are based on the deliberate, taking out of context of his statements and actions! www.columbusedproject.org

@PurpleBottom91 That's what I was saying. This is why you need to read and understand the comments before you reply.

I don't promote other websites on my page.

I just comment here and there on SW.

@Thinkerbell i’m not promoting this website. You are in effect allowing anti-Columbus misinformation to go unchallenged. You should be ashamed of yourself!
Thinkerbell · 41-45, F
@PurpleBottom91

I'm so ashamed of myself that I promise to make it up to Columbus by doing all my Christmas shopping at the Columbus Circle Mall.

Italian monarchy?

What are you talking about?
Ducky · 31-35, F
@yestestvennaya The reigning king and queen during Christopher Columbus’s time?
yestestvennaya · 22-25, F
@Ducky Isabella I and Ferdinand II. Rulers of Castile and Aragon. Isabella wanted to fund Columbus' voyage. Eventually she received news of the problems, including Columbus and some of his aides committing horrible acts. Some of the Spanish crew suffered also. Some rebelled.

Sometimes the natives were peaceful. Welcoming. When they became aware of hostilities, they became less peaceful. Less welcoming. It happened. But not every Spaniard was a monster, and the Catholic missionaries were not happy with the treatment of natives.

The Italian Columbus lied to Queen Isabella. He denied his wrongdoings and painted false pictures.
Ducky · 31-35, F
@yestestvennaya I figured it was obvious what I was referring to, but glad to have answered your question. Or I suppose you did, rather.
