Ancient war was probably alot less glorious than we think.

Like thousands of people marching for weeks or months with 80 pounds of gear then they all stand huddled together and poke, trying not to all fall over.

But then we see the 300 series and think that would be so cool. Idfk whats real anymore man.🤷‍♂🙁

ancient battles didn't involve as much strategy & tactics as historians would have everyone believe; marching up in flanks meeting face to face was more about numbers than anything...

many also have this false notion that battle is all close quarters combat with warriors duking it out 1 vs 1 like a video game. In reality, especially today; 80% of casualties are inflicted by indirect fire (artillery, mortars, etc.). Back then, a good longbowman was worth a dozen swordsmen.

@wildbill83 ganghis khan and his feint retreats with horse archers killed of 10 percent of the worlds population. Ancient mobile artillery 👌

@GuyWithOpinions they claim german army invented blitzkrieg "lightning war", moving at 22 miles per day

The Mongols were covering 60-90 miles a day, 700 years before Germany...

@wildbill83 thet also didnt have heavy machinery to haul around. They would set up camps then just pack up when they nees to move. Hard to attack a camp when its never in the same spot twice

Don't forget about the typhus, dysentery, and smallpox.

(Google's AI listed these as the top three killers of ancient soldiers)
I think the glory was not in those parts...

@jshm2 It's no fun for most of those actually fighting on the victorious side either. But they don't usually write the history.
