70 years ago today, the French fortified position at Dien Bien Phu in Indochina, finally surrendered, after nearly two months under siege by the Vietnamese forces under command of the wily General Giap.
@JSul3 im British, and we had the British Empire, spanning about 25% of the world. We built schools, railways and all the other accoutrements of civilisation..Whats wrong there?Should we just have left all the people to die of tribal wars and diseases?
@wonkywinky That could have all been achieved by dealing with those nations on an equal footing....not occupation by force.
Walking into a foreign land and saying: "We are here to take your country, make whatever improvements that we see as necessary for our best interests, and you will bow to our Queen and fully embrace our religious beliefs, and like it" is not my cup of tea. Tell me how many the British killed in order to accomplish their goals? Almost 9 million.
Beginning just a few months after Dien Bien Phu,France faced conflict in another location - the war in Algeria produced political upheaval and civil disorder in France until 1962.
Hats off to Giáp’s troops for hauling artillery piece-by-piece up all those mountains. Ike refused to help the French, but then the US eventually took their place supporting South Vietnam. Didn’t go so well…
@wonkywinky The US Secretary of Defense, Robert McNamara, knew the war was unwinnable, and probably LBJ. Nixon and Kissinger as well. 50,000 Americans and perhaps two million Vietnamese lost their lives as a result of their arrogance.
