70 years ago today,the French fortified position at Dien Bien Phu in Indochina,finally surrendered,after nearly two months under siege by the Vietnamese forces under command of the wily General Giap.

@JSul3 im British,and we had the British Empire,spanning about 25% of the world.We built schools,railways and all the other accoutrements of civilisation..Whats wrong there?Should we just have left all the people to die of tribal wars and diseases?

@wonkywinky That could have all been achieved by dealing with those nations on an equal footing....not occupation by force.

Walking into a foreign land and saying: "We are here to take your country, make whatever improvements that we see as necessary for our best interests, and you will bow to our Queen and fully embrace our religious beliefs, and like it" is not my cup of tea. Tell me how many the British killed in order to accomplish their goals?
