People like to reference the KKK a lot in arguments

But they seem to know very little about the history of the KKK, who founded it and why, what their objectives were, who opposed them, and why it resurged in popularity after fizzling out less than a decade after it was initially founded. 🤔

The same could be said for the Nazis or various other historical "baddies".

Let's just say this: if your primary goal in citing history is to "own" a political side you don't like, you probably have a poor (and very limited) understanding of that history. 🤷‍♂️

Im really not that great on American History TBH. Mayb its the Dunning Kruger effect tho *laughs*

Europe is more interesting.
I like Russian History, kinda intersting how nothing has changed there really in 400 years🤷‍♀️.
I think knowing Chinese history back to like 17th century is helpful and understanding Confucius. Like the opium wars and stuff. I mean Trump had no understanding of anything and got no where, like duh. Read a book u know?
Bang5luts · M
@Alison I absolutely agree. When speaking of American history, it is so brief and not much was built on actual factual occurrences, more on manipulation and perspectives. Chinese history is so very rich and deep, more enchanting and gripping.

@Bang5luts amercian history unless you bother looking into it is:

We wrote what still remains the greatest constitution "yay us"
We had slaves.
We grew tobacco
We invented the cotton gin which kept slavery going for a few more decades.
The north and south had a war over slaverly. The north won and slavery was outlawed "yay us"
We got involved in WW II and won it for the allies "yay us"
We shot Luther and that was a mistake.
Kennedy got shot.
We started a lot of wars in the middle east.
911 happened.
We had more dumb wars.
We elected a black president "yay us"

Thats it as far as I can tell
Bang5luts · M
@Alison all of those occurrences were built on corruption and the hard work of the common man, woman, child and slavery of other human beings. Sadly enough

I've seen that a lot on here, from the person you engaged with as well. They are pretty ignorant in general.

You inform them about party realignment and it goes over their heads, as if they never cracked open a history book
deadgerbil · 26-30, M
@SW-User exactly. They are going against the conservatives of yesterday so long as it's convenient for their argument, but they fail to realize they'd advocate for the exact same things if they were alive back then

A textbook example of religious conservatives back in the day

@deadgerbil That last guy sounds more like a Birch society nut.

@deadgerbil This always inspires general gnashing of teeth, and the ol’ Sunsporter reacharound:

Funny how the anti-badguys always turn out to be the badguys…
* looks at Antifa and NATO* 😑
SW-User
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout NATO is definitely bad. Communists are not nearly as bad as Americans were raised to believe they were. Westerners know about communist atrocities, but they don’t know about millions of people killed in the name of anti-communism.
@SW-User that’s like the mop-up. You let the commies get rid of the disobedient. Then you’re left with a troublesome militant group you need to squash
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
Actually, I NEVER saw the "KKK "in a SW subject line, until yours today.
@SusanInFlorida Dig deeper, this is only the start.

@thedarkside Antifa so scary 😂

Yeah and the far left constantly lie about who the KKK were, but anybody who's ever picked up a history book knows that it was started by southern Democrats. I've heard people surrpised to find out that they weren't Republicans, probably because school lies to kids and isn't educating anybody anymore. Our school system has failed.
IWasCallingYaLarry · 31-35, M
@SW-User Idk about that. I've seen videos before of people automatically thinking that KKK were Republicans, which they weren't and I'm pretty sure there are leftists who will lie about them and say they weren't Democrats. And the uniparty does exist, so I honestly don't care to defend Republicans, either. I hate both parties and am a registered Moderate.
SW-User
@IWasCallingYaLarry Then that's definitely a failing. A lot of people on both sides think "Democrat" has always meant "liberal" and "Republican" has always meant "conservative" and that the parties have never changed, which is not at all the case if you study the history. The parties used to be only very loosely associated with ideology.
IWasCallingYaLarry · 31-35, M
@SW-User You're right, I know. That is why we have the term "The Overton Window." Parties shift every couple generations or so. Republicans today were the Democrats of yesterday and vice versa.
TeirdalinFirefall · 31-35, M
I mean the kkk are just a bunch of evil wizards, not much else to know about them.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
It's true that the Democratic party at that time founded the KKK, and the Republican Party at that time included Abraham Lincoln.

It's also true that at some point, the definitions of liberal and conservative were changed for no discernible reason, so that they mean the opposite now of what they meant in those days. And it's true that the two political parties changed their values so drastically that Lincoln wouldn't recognize his own party members today, and would denounce them as Confederate sympathizers. The modern KKK, and yes, they exist, are all vehemently opposed to the Democratic party that founded them in the first place because of this shift in values.
SW-User
@LordShadowfire This also seems to irk them, as well:

And reminding them of this:

Theyitis · 36-40, M
@SW-User I once saw a Republican post a meme that, among other things, blamed Democrats for both putting up Confederate monuments and taking them down, like both those things were bad.
