What do you know about the Suez crisis 1956 without googling it?

It's ironic how Russia stopped a war back then but now it's the one causing another war.

I mean Russia did certainly play a part but Lester B Pearson of Canada also won the Noble Peace Prize by getting the Brits to cool off. He was even accused at home of selling out the Brits as if we owed our former colonial masters anything.

It is funny though the USSR seemed to really not like him because they vetoed his nomination as UN Secretary General twice.
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow I found that on Wikipedia today. I'm Egyptian, I wonder why he was never mentioned in history lessons back in school.

Everyone was actually more empressed (not sure it's the right word) by how Khrushchev put his shoe on the table and threatened everyone. It wasn't written in history like that obviously but I remember my father telling me about it as if Khrushchev was an awesome person. He sure played a huge role in saving our country but he definitely wasn't alone and he had his own interests. We should thank you Canadians more.
@PiecingBabyFaceTogether No idea. It is weird what gets omitted sometimes.

Khrushchev was pretty interesting and handled it kind of the way you would expect a working class guy to do it. lol

But yeah, Lester B Pearson was a pretty successful and skilled diplomat. Even later became our PM.

Russia, or rather the Soviet Union, did however invade Hungary at about the same time.
@MartinII Yes I just read that. Nobody is innocent it seems.

@MartinII 🤔yes was the hungarian uprising in 1956

{@piecingbabyfacetogether ] what i remember was it nasser that blocked the suez canal to shipping and foriegn vessels . it is ironic in those days during the cold war russia should do such a noble thing to avoid conflict but i also suspect there would of been other reasons for the russians too
@smiler2012 Nasser did that after he realized he can't fight 3 countries at the same time. The Egyptian army sunk 40 ships to block the canal.
I know yes the Soviets didn't do it because they loved Nasser everyone had interests and I think blocking the canal was going to be bad for everyone.
I know that the British Olympic team (non athletes) had to travel to the Melbourne Olympics via the horn of Africa because the canal was closed..😷

Never heard of it. That irony sounds familiar with my country though.
@Ducky Yea that's true.

You think Russia stopped that war? Maybe you should really look it up.

Eisenhower, after getting some assurances from Nasser, gave the French/British/Israelis an ultimatum: get the hell out, or the the US will interfere.
