The collapse of history

I have noticed a trend in our society towards using cherry picked “facts” as bats to bludgeon people with.

Social media has a lot to answer for.

We (I) have become really reactive.

Jumping to conclusions about people.

Construing things through the most negative possible lens.

I have been guilty of this too.

Our society is complex.

History is complex.

Looking at things through any particular lens might be valuable to add to the sum of human knowledge - but isn’t an end in itself.

If we aren’t using the lens consciously as a tool then it is an impediment to sight.

The thing that gets me is that there's a political agenda from both the left and the right that tells us everyone is on either side of the extreme. If someone says they support the troops people are to quick to conclude that that person is also a gun toting conservative who hates gays, transgender people, women, blacks, and more. If someone says they support debt relief for students in college, theyre labelled as a communist/fascist that wants total government control over every fascet of life. It is absurd. It isnt their faults either; quite the contrary: The agendas by the right and left and the media have been feeding this to the average citizen on the daily. What's worse? People actually buy it. They dont think for themselves. They dont realize that just because they disagree with abortion they have to align all their moral and economic and social values with the extreme right. Same goes for vice versa (the left).
It's a crying shame because people dont realize they can think for themselves. And all it does is divide us and be quick to label others (just as youre speaking about).
Critical thinking is so important. So so important. People need to wake up and realize this.
I dont have all the answers. Im so far from it. But i at least see the absurdities in it, and i refuse to see someone as an enemy simply because they disagree with me. And i refuse to immediately label them as something theyre most likely not. People are extremely diverse and varied. We need to be better.

Your words are wise and well spoken. We need to listen to them

those who forget history are doomed to repeat it...

This was my point ten years ago. It's not at all in any way shape or form a social medium.

Private behind scene side conversations can take place.

Countless numbers of people read anything you wrote, then draw unverified conclusions and don't even bother to look for clarification.

Most "social" sites lead to nowhere for any thinking person. It's always a matter of time before these shrewd narcissists overtake a site and drive away every free thinking person.

Interesting thoughts tonight. I think we are conditioned by social media, news outlets, politicians, and even our families to see something as a snippet and to see it the way the reporter sees it. Well the world doesn't work that way. It isn't just black and white; there's every color imaginable if we seek it out and take the time to uncover the true facts.

@Fungirlmmm Indeed! As a curious person, I am sometimes blown away by the richness of what I discover and I am sad for modern society that we seem to be losing our awareness of that rich array of history as well as losing our courtesy towards each other
calicuz · 56-60, M
Exactly. With a great tool like the internet at our fingertips, many still choose to simply repeat what they hear and follow blindly, instead of finding valuable information and drawing their own conclusions.
SW-User
@calicuz truth! We are incredibly lucky to have so much knowledge at our fingertips.

I think part of the problem may be information fatigue and also it is so easy to race for a confirmation of our beliefs rather than take the time to thoroughly explore an issue from different perspectives - which I believe we used to be better at. Opinions of vastly different quality - in terms of the purpose of the communication and the amount of thought and research that has gone into it - can create equal amounts of internet “noise”
SteelHands · 61-69, M
@calicuz search engines are partly to blame since they emphasize personal. Interest data collection for commercial sales, then they personalize search rankings tailored to each individual as if people are incapable of shifting interests or intellectual growth.

There's a few that think the internet is a vast wasteland of bots, algorithms and assorted people who suk at life.

Maybe they're right.

@SW-User @SteelHands

I agree with both of you.
I HAVE found myself becoming exhausted in searching a subject, but find myself coming to a point of taking a break and picking up again later.
I think people need to LEARN to search for information, and not just give up so easily.
I mean, on any given search there are several pages that the browser comes up with, and few people probably go past the first one.

They are going to say bad things about any group they can get away with saying it about.
Kind of sucks
The antidote is to accept that we don't know.

But "don't know" mind is uncomfortable.

That means not having a story that explains everything. It means not having every person and every thing sorted into their boxes. It means not knowing whose fault things are, what we're going to do, what the outcomes are.

In truth-- we don't know any of that.

"Don't know" mind really gives us freedom. Pliancy. Space.

@CopperCicada the beauty of ‘not knowing’ is it is like swimming - your mind is always open to absorbing more information

So True.. And never forget the effect of the time on values. Statues are now being torn down to people who are demons in this time, but were upstanding (mostly) men in their day. No one mentions that George Washington was a slave owner.. In his time that was the way of things and it isnt fair to judge him by the standards of today..😷
calicuz · 56-60, M
@whowasthatmaskedman

Of course we judge him by the standards of today. There is no condoning, justifying or dismissing slave ownership.
Many of the "founding fathers" claimed Christianity as their faith, so how can a Christian justify personally owning slaves, when their own Bible talks about the Israelites being wrongfully enslaved by the Egyptians.
Just because you hold slave owners in high regard doesn't mean everyone else should.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@calicuz I accept your viewpoint.. But his "bad act" doesnt diminish the mans great achievements. It provides a counterpoint to them. As wrong as they were, those were the standards of the time..😷

The greatest trick that someone pulled was turning people against each other. Sadly.
easterniowegin · 51-55, M
Too many ppl prefer to be spoonfed their info and told what/how to think.
The number of ppl who have been recently opposed to individual research is astounding.

The internet has created millions of low-info consumers. They have shortened attention spans and prefer to read headlines, not articles. This all points to the increased hive mentality.

Just ride the wave. It's all you can do at this point.

@astrosandorbits thanks for the great reply

It’s just easier for some to resort to this approach rather than having an opinion based in and on reality.
Well of course. History leads to learning from the past. That is actually Marxist.
Wise observations !
